During a visit to Kalkara, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg announced an investment of more than €6 million for the regeneration of the Kalkara Waterfront, a project which will be carried out by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation (GHRC). Also present was Mayor of Kalkara Wayne Aquilina.
“We are constantly working to change the face of our country and ensure that every corner of it incorporates the right infrastructure. Furthermore, however, we are committed to continue offering more security and an improved quality of life for the people of these communities. Such projects go further. These investments, like other projects currently being carried out by the GHRC, including the regeneration of Senglea, are all a proof of a government that is both aware of its country’s history, its historical heritage and the importance of these places. Therefore, we are seeing that through such works these historical places’ identity is restored. There is still work to be done, but we will not give up. We will remain committed to provide a better life to all our communities”, said Minister Ian Borg.
This project is expected to include several works of improvement for the Kalkara community including 650 meters of new paving and new benches with improved sea access which will be a part of a 4.5km continuous walking path from Bighi to Isla point. New trees will be planted and an irrigation system which will ensure efficient watering of landscaped areas will also be implemented. The square in front of the church will be transformed into a pedestrian zone and among other facilities, it is expected that three canopies will be built to provide a shaded space for people to meet and socialise, as well as the incorporation of a new playground in the square which will provide a safer and more accessible environment for children.
GHRC Chairman Anthony Agius Decelis said that, “Even in Kalkara, sustainable investment is underway to further raise the living standards of the people in these areas. This is another project that will continue to make a mark in the area and send a strong message that this government will not leave anyone alone”.
The project will also include the construction of new drainage and water systems to match the demand of the always growing necessities of this area in the Kottonera. For more security, a CCTV system will also be installed and for a more aesthetically pleasing look a new lighting system will complement both the pedestrian area and the square as well as other lighting systems planned for the Cottonera bastions.
“I warmly welcome this investment for the proper regeneration of the Kalkara Waterfront. This is a dream for the Kalkara community and look forward to see it become a reality. I firmly believe in the potential that our village offers and thanks to GHRC, in the coming months, I look forward to give the people of Kalkara a wonderful area for everyone to enjoy”, said Mayor Wayne Aquilina.
