Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated the regeneration project for Kalkara’s square and waterfront, a project carried out by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation (GHRC). This project created an open space for families measuring 16,500m² in the heart of the community, a pedestrian zone of 3,000m² in the same square, a promenade enhanced with street furniture and improved lighting system, a new playground, and a new service system along with planted trees that further beautified the central area of Kalkara.
Another open space for the people in the heart of the community
In his address, Prime Minister Robert Abela explained how a square has been recreated and given back to the people. He stated that this was an important project among other major projects ongoing in the Cottonera, an area in which the government believes in its potential. Dr. Abela noted how this part of Malta is attracting significant investment with quality projects that place families at the center. In this context, the Prime Minister emphasized the balance between regeneration work and preserving historical features.
“We want Kalkara to be more beautiful, but this also means we want it to retain its unique characteristics,” asserted Prime Minister Robert Abela, noting how the GHRC project, which gave another square to the people, has transformed a space previously occupied by vehicles into an area for family enjoyment. The waterfront is now more beautiful and accessible to everyone. The Prime Minister also mentioned the role of local councils in important projects carried out in collaboration with government entities.
The Minister for the Environment, Energy, and the Grand Harbour Regeneration Miriam Dalli said that this is a key project through which Kalkara has been beautified, services have been modernized, and a space has been provided that has made the locality’s center truly the beating heart of Kalkara. “A project that is also a symbol of our commitment to continue creating more open spaces where the community, families, and people can meet; where with economic and cultural activities, we offer moments of relaxation for residents and visitors to our islands,” stated Minister Dalli.
Also speaking at the inauguration were the Mayor of Kalkara Wayne Aquilina and the CEO of GHRC Gino Cauchi. Mayor Aquilina said, “Proud that we have reached this point. We are giving back a beautiful waterfront and square to the people. A project that has changed the dynamics of Kalkara and further enhanced the value and potential of the village. While I wholeheartedly thank everyone who was involved in making this dream for Kalkara residents a reality, I look forward to seeing the Kalkara community and the general public enjoying this area not just today but in the future.” For his part, Gino Cauchi emphasized that the GHRC is proud of the implementation of this project as today Kalkara boasts a beautiful waterfront that is already attracting the attention of many residents and visitors. “The GHRC is committed to continuing to carry out more regeneration projects in the Grand Harbour,” reiterated the GHRC CEO.
